Apart from any obvious injury to the back, the chief symptom of back ache is pain in the lumbosacral region, which is the lower back

The signs and symptoms of lower back ache can vary, they can be a widespread nagging pain, or a sudden spasm of pain, the pain may come and then disappear, and this can persist for many years following the onset of the first back discomfort.
Some Common Symptoms of Back Pain.
- The pain maybe in the lower back region only, or it can be felt in both legs.
- Pain may be experienced after a prolonged sitting, or lying in one position, and require back muscle stretching to bring temporary relief.
- If there is a compressed nerve in the spine, then feelings of weakness or numbness may be felt in both legs, especially in the leg part which receives its nerve supply from the compressed nerve.
- The pain increases with activities associated with bending and lifting.
- If numbness is experienced in the legs this can be expressed by an inability to flex the sole of the foot, and the person would be unable to stand on tip toe, due to the sacral nerve at the base of the spine, being compressed or damaged.
- A further symptom is the inability to raise the big toe due to a disorder in the fifth lumbar nerve.
It is wise for any person suffering from persistent back pain to visit a doctor. Whilst pain in the lower back often goes away of its own accord, the doctor can carry out a complete evaluation and check for more serious afflictions causing the symptoms, such as injuries to spinal bones (fractures), any infections, or signs of any tumours on the spine.
